‘Rhizome is a modified subterranean stem of a plant that sends out roots and shoots from its nodes. Rhizomes are also called breeding rootstalks and rootstocks. Rhizomes develop from axillary buds and grow horizontally. The rhizome also retains the ability to allow the shoots to grow upwards’ Dictonary definition

‘A rhizome has no beginning or end; it is always in the middle, between things, interbeing, intermezzo’  Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus

I started drawing roots in an effort to describe what lies beneath the surface, those hidden stories that weave in and through us, changing, mutating and throwing out their shoots into every area of our visible lives.

These pieces are roughly A2, made with graphite and ins and painted on the vertical to allow for the media to run and splatter in unpredictable ways.
